Age is a state of mind...

Anyone who keeps the ability to see beauty never grows old.
- Franz Kafka

  1. Beauty impacts on society through the technology that is advanced in the modern era. Every opportunity the public are explained through the media the advantages of beauty products. But the truth in Metamorphosis and the modern era an individual is never truly able to define something this is so important. An individual has to truly decide for themselves, people feel the necessity to undergo surgery for both personal reasons and the impact of society. This is portrayed as the audiences feelings towards Gregor has an insect and as a human. As a human he can be described has a kind and considerate man. But our attitude towards beauty affects our feelings towards a man who is still the same but physically looks different.

For me personally I believe Kafka quotation is an unfortunate example for a society that main concern is beauty. In every individual life there is many occasions when a member of society doesn't meet up to their individual standards. For me Kafka is explaining to us if the audience accepted individuals for being themselves then individuals would live a fuller longer more enjoyable life. As an audience this shows Kafka was intelligent individual who accepted individuals for themselves not their physical appearances. It also shows Kafka was able to see the future,as an audience their still a doubt if their will be acceptance for people who are defined as not 'normal'.

As a society an individual qualities would shine through due to the acceptance of a society. As an individual Gregor was never accepted so was never able to have the essence of youth forever.

  3. Right ill start again.. XD

At first when i read this quote i thought that Kafka was trying to convey that we may judge people by their appearances, a prime example is metamorphosis and how we the reader react to the descriptions portraying the once human character. If he was human we would not see him as such a disgusting character and would solely judge him on his personality and attributes. Kafka describes him as a caring man who cares for his family, this is shown by how he works to pay off the family and debt. In addition he saves a small amount of money per week so he can hopefully send his sister away.

How ever this could be related to modern society and how the media portray that a "certain look" is beautiful a recent example of this is anorexic teenagers. As Nicole has said Beauty if everything to them and it certain cases they may go to the extremes of plastic surgery to change what god has given them to satisfy their own vanity. This is not helped by the constant adverts aired on television about cosmetic problems.

Another thought that came into my head is that Kafka could be telling us that as we age and our life progresses there are many things that can dishearten us from the beauty and natue of the world, and so if we were to appreciate life to its fullest we dont have to grow "old" mentally in the sense we would rejoice every living moment.

  4. My interpretation of this quote is that beauty is only skin deep and some can see past it but others can’t. When referring back to Metamorphosis the sister within the story I believe see’s gregors inner beauty for example his personality and kindness towards her (when he wants to send her to the musical school). Another explanation for this quote I believe that people judge a person by the first appearance, and the first perception of Gregor we get is a horrible and disgusting, but in actual fact the character is a genuine hard working individual who lives a normal life and when referring to modern day society this idea of judge a book by it cover doesn’t necessarily mean there horrible or bad. The modern day viewpoint on this quote could help influence the readers mind to think negatively about Metamorphosis. The medias influence on the publics view has now moulded the stereotypical look of a person and if looking outside the ‘norm’ you could then relate this to Kafka as he may have been insecure about himself.
