Read and Review

This link will take you to a written piece on Metamorphosis.

We must always be careful with our sources.  The interweb is now so vast and contradictory that we must learn to rely on certain sources and treat new ones with caution.

  1. This article is set in a straightforward structure and is easily worded which makes this article easier to understand then some other pieces of work which can be found on the internet. "The Metamorphosis is obviously a story about alienation" this quotation makes me question my own mind and makes me think why? who says that this quote is correct? how does this author know what Kafka was thinking or trying to promote in this piece of work. "briefly considers what it means to be 'human'; if he can be so moved by his sister's music then surely he cannot be an animal" we have considered that he may just think he is a animal and maybe isnt this then supports the thoery. 'bloomed' this could refer to how Kafka felt about his feel life sister ottla. "Kafka saw his mother as timidly hiding behind his father's actions" shows how kafkas life had such a strong influence on his writing, also how maybe not only how he was scared of his father but also the other people around his father, hes portraying his real life father in a negative way.

I think this source is useful for somethings but not all the information is relevant as it is only looking at it from one view point it does not take in to consideration other theories for example fruedian.

  2. This article is not a generalised commentary on The Metamorphosis. It has been written looking at Metamorphosis from an existentialist perspective, giving it a definite direction. This can be seen in the use of "obviously" showing the writer's firm belief in what they are saying. It's almost like they are trying to persuade others to their perspective. As a source, it would be extremely useful to someone who shared a similar perspective however the fact that it does have a focused perspective could limit it's use to someone with a different or conflicting perspective. Despite this there are some good points highlighted that would be useful to anyone studying The Metamorphosis from any perspective. It gives a neutral summary of the novella which is always useful, It then goes on to give two possible readings, one taking Gregor as actually becoming a bug and the other as his transformation being entirely within Gregor's mind, both of these readings are approached from an existentialist perspective. It also highlights the fact that Gregor is not the only character who undergoes a metamorphosis
"The Samsa family undergoes metamorphoses of their own" This section of the article is very useful as it goes through the changes in each family member individually.

When evaluating the BBC website as a source, you would expect it to be a reliable one. The BBC is a respected national organisation with access to hundreds of experts and professionals to write for their websites.Well, not necessarily, this particular section of the BBC website is called h2g2 or The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy. This is an open space to put information. Information from anyone about anything, this information can then be edited by anyone or anything much in the same way Wikipedia can be. This means that, although the information could be reliable there's always the chance that this person has no idea what they are talking about. Which I don't think is the case here but the possibility's there
