Kafka on Literature

"Books are a narcotic"

How does Kafka's writing style operate on the reader to engage them with the narrative and the thematic content?

How does Kafka make the reader want to read and understand his work?

Is it fair to say that Metamorphosis has a dream-like quality to the writing?

Provide your thoughts on this quotation and these questions.

  1. Kafka's writing style engages the reader in the sense that he creates a mysterious and ambigious tone to his work, this is shown in metamorphosis as at the start we dont really understand the scenes that unfold due to them being surreal to the reader.

His style intrigues us and so we want to read on and understand the plot of the story. This also ties in with the dream-like impression that is conveyed, the unrealism can only be achieved by our imaginations.

And so the quote "Books are a narcotic" could suggest that his love for literature played a huge role in his life and the comparison shows how it is addictive. Through his work i think he tries to inspire and influence us, just how it did for him.

  2. Kafka helps to engage the reader by creating mysterious and strange thoughts that are passed around in a readers mind, this therefore making the reader want to continue reading. For example the idea of a human becoming a bug would challenge any humans mind and makes them become intrigued with the story, this also being surreal to what would be the normal mind set of that person.

The quotation “books are narcotics” suggests it to be addictive and intriguing just like this novella. Kafka does this on purpose I believe to create tension and imagination to the readers mind.

I believe that the dream like quality within the novella allows it to be more child friendly but I think it allows an adult to access there child like qualities as a human.

  3. A narrative so open to responses the words flow so beautifully into the audiences minds, that cast images of the world around us.The topic of metamorphios is so obscure that the audience are shocked by it but Kafka keeps the readers intersetted by the highs and lows of the novella.

Kafka work is an orginial novella that is never going to be replicated it a text that creates so many viewpoints.

Personally the pharse 'dream like quality' does not enter my mind when I first think of the novella. The Novella to me is not a dream I would like to be in. The words have been perfectly choosen for the text and the spefic audience it realtes to.

Books are narcotics they leave you with great expernices that affect your emotional state. The words are beautifully presented to give you diffrent viewpoints and to affect your physical state. Also as soon as you first read books, they are an irrestiable addiction that makes you contuine reading.
